SUMMARY:Heritage Lecture: “Hypocrite’s Row\,” a novel by Eliot Kleinberg (Prohibition in South Florida)
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Lecture Season 2025-2026\nEliot Kleinberg presents his novel\, “Hypocrite’s Row.” \nThis enlightening and adventurous novel provides a rare glimpse into 1920’s Florida history\, when Prohibition was more or less a joke. \nTo set the stage: Along the open coastline just a few hours’ boat ride from the British Bahamas\, wealthy society swells\, gangsters\, and tourists paid handsomely to drink. The suppliers became folk heroes and the lawman the villain. Eliot Kleinberg shares the sordid history\, and absolute failure\, of Prohibition in Palm Beach County in his novel Hypocrite’s Row\, the first book of the “Adventures of Nate Moran” series. This one will be fun! \nTuesday\, May 12th\, 2026\, 6:00pm \n$15 / Free to Society members + Creative Arts School Students. Space is limited. \nCreative Arts School at Old School Square\, Suite C\, 51 North Swinton Avenue\, Delray Beach \n$12; Free to DBHS & Swinton Community Growing Project members and Creative Arts School students. \nNot a DBHS Member? Join today! https://delraybeachhistory.org/support/. \nLearn about the Creative Arts School at Old School Square. https://www.delraybeachfl.gov/CAS \nEliot Kleinberg\, born in South Florida\, spent nearly a half century in daily journalism before retiring in December 2020 after 33-½ years at The Palm Beach Post in West Palm Beach. In addition to covering local news\, he also wrote extensively about Florida and Florida history. He has written fourteen books — and co-wrote or contributed to several more — all focusing on Florida. The son of longtime South Florida journalist Howard Kleinberg\, he has two degrees from the University of Florida. He is a member of several historical societies\, lectures regularly\, and publishes a blog on better writing. He and his wife are parents of two adult sons and live in suburban Boca Raton.
