Black History Study

The Spady Cultural Heritage Museum invites learners of all ages (middle school, high school, and adults) to participate in a 7-month cultural education experience that centers the African Diaspora. The Black History Education Program offers learning through hands-on activities, community field trips, and storytelling. The curriculum, developed by Brian Knowles of Power Builders, is designed to engage middle schoolers, high schoolers, and adults alike. Join us for an engaging and informative discussion with Dr. Vincent Edward Oluwole Adejumo, Senior Lecturer of African American Studies and affiliate Senior Lecturer of Political Science at the University of Florida. Dr. Vincent Adejumo provides a powerful overview of the origins of the Black Seminoles of Florida, their impact in the Seminole Wars, and their legacy after being exiled from Florida. The Black Seminoles are a group of African Americans, Native Americans and Seminoles of mixed-race descent. Their history in Florida dates back to the 18th century when African slaves began to escape from plantations and join the Seminole Nation. [...]
