Black folk continue to be resilient in these difficult times, but it is no secret that we have been wounded spiritually, mentally and emotionally. Over the past decade much has been amplified about the need to destigmatize mental health and to ensure that the church isn’t the only place of refuge… but we need to dig deeper. The fact of the matter is, if we are serious about Black healing and liberation, we need to have conversations about how oppressive systems impact our faith and our wellness. We need to talk about what it means to decolonize.

Join this Community Growth Talk curated for Black folk only. Shawna Murray-Browne, LCSW-C of Kindred Community Healing will connect deeply with special guest Rev. Dr. Heber Brown III of Pleasant Hope Baptist Church.

The following will be discussed:

– How has the church upheld colonial systems?

– How has this impacted our path to mental wellness and healing?

– What does it mean to decolonize one’s faith?

– Where in the Bible can we go to affirm this path?

Therapy That Liberates Community Growth Talks are to support Black folk in remembering how to heal themselves by raising critical consciousness and fortifying collective change. represents a shift in expectation of who is qualified to hold space for Black folk in mental health care. Honoring original wisdom and grounded in Black community, practitioners and healers alike are being led by Shawna Murray-Browne, LCSW-C on a path to decolonize therapy for Black folk.
