Dr. Vincent Adejumo provides a powerful overview of the origins of the Black Seminoles of Florida, their impact in the Seminole Wars, and their legacy after being exiled from Florida.
The Black Seminoles are a group of African Americans, Native Americans and Seminoles of mixed-race descent. Their history in Florida dates back to the 18th century when African slaves began to escape from plantations and join the Seminole Nation. Over the years, the two groups intermarried and formed a unique community that was distinct from both African American and Native American culture. By the mid-19th century, the Black Seminoles had become an influential force in Florida and were involved in a number of conflicts and skirmishes with the U.S. government.
The history of the Black Seminoles is an often overlooked yet incredibly important part of Florida’s history. Their contributions to the state’s past, culture and economy have been invaluable and deserve to be explored and celebrated.
